Green chilli pickle recipe - Today I am sharing with you all a very important item which needs to be stored for the use in day to day meal to serve as a tantalizing side dish. That is pickle. Pickle is an essential item in vegetarian meal. A teaspoon of pickle turns a simple meal into a delectable meal. Today I am sharing with you all one such healthy green chilli pickle recipe prepared with home made pickle powder, green chillies, lemon juice and a small quantity of oil. You can  prepare this pickle as and when required.

  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp asafoetida / hing powder
  • 18 - 20 lemons
  • 250 grams green chillies
  • A tsp turmeric powder / haldi powder
  • Salt as required
For the pickle powder
  • 25 grams fenugreek seeds / methi dana
  • 75 grams husked split mustard seeds / sasma dali

Green chilli pickle - step by step pictures

1.  Roast the husked split mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds separately until aromatic and golden brown in colour. Keep them aside and allow to cool. Combine together the roasted seeds and grind it to a fine powder and set aside.

2.  Wash the green chillies and pat dry. Then spread them on a paper and allow to dry completely. Remove the stems. Slit them from the stem side till  half keeping the lower part intact.

3.  Cut the lemon into halves and squeeze out the juice in a broad vessel and set aside.
4.  Heat the oil in a pan and add the asafoetida powder. Stir for a while and switch off the flame. 

5.  When the oil become warm, add the turmeric powder. Add the powder prepared above (methi-mustard powder). 

6.  Add the lemon juice and make a thick idli batter consistency paste. Add sufficient salt. So that the paste is salty. Allow it to cool.

7.  Now add the slitted green chillies to this paste.  mix well.

8.  Transfer it to a clean dry jar. Keep the jar in a dry pl;ace. The pickle will be ready to use after 10-12 days.

  1. Here salt is the preservative, hence sufficient salt should be used so that the pickle doesn't get spoiled. 
  2. Before storing the pickle, taste some paste and adjust the salt.

Crispy banana chips recipe - How to make banana chips

Banana chips or plantain wafors recipe - Banana chips is an easy to prepare snack which is very tasty. When I serve some crispy snacks with hot cup of tea or coffee to my family and friends, it gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction. Chips are also called as wafors.  

In Kerala, Tamil Nadu and some parts of Karnataka, a variety of banana called nendra baale (plantain) is used to make these chips. But, here I don't get that variety. So, without any option, I make chips with banana which is easily available in the vegetable market. In comparison, chips prepared with nendra banana is more tastier than the chips prepared with other varieties of banana.

  • 4 raw banana / plantain
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Coconut oil for frying

1.  Wash the bananas and pat dry

2.  Take a large bowl and put 2  cups of water. Add the turmeric powder and mix well.

3.  Peel the bananas and scrape out to thin round slices and put them in turmeric water. Set aside for 2 - 3 minutes.

4.  Drain the water and pour some plain cold water on the banana slices. Drain and spread the banana slices on a paper and set aside for 15 minutes. In the meantime, dissolve 1/2 tsp salt in 3 - 4 tbsp of water and set aside.

5.  Heat coconut oil in a frying pan and fry the slices on medium flame till half done. When you hearing ssss  sound, sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon of salted water, immediately you'll  hear bubble bursting sound. it precipitate after a while. Fry the chips for a minute or till crispy. Drain on an absorbent paper.

6.  When the chips come to room temperature, store in an airtight container.
Serve banana chips with hot tea or coffee.
